Mars Africa, the company responsible for brands such as M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles, Pedigree and Royco, is updating its packaging to reduce waste. The multi-food global conglomerate will implement a new modular packaging policy that will cut costs, increase efficiency and minimise waste.
The initiative is part of the company’s worldwide ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ plan. So far, Mars Africa has managed to save over 350 tonnes of paper and enough water to supply 235 households per year. Mars Incorporated currently employs over 100 000 people across 80 countries, with each subsidiary company adhering to the sustainability initiative.
Sustainable in a Generation
This sustainability plan is designed to make changes to the way in which Mars Incorporated does business. These changes will be tangible and based on the latest research. The company will invest $1-billion (~R14-billion) over the next five years to improve its sustainability and to reduce its impact on the environment.
The ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ plan was launched in 2017 and is an ambitious vision for better business practices. “We’ve implemented various programmes in South Africa, across the continent and globally to make sure we’re playing our part to reach these important goals,” says Mars Africa general manager Brian Ayling.
Mars to aim for zero-waste-to-landfill
Since the implementation of the ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ plan, Mars Incorporated has reached a number of global milestones. Mars Africa is proud of its progress and is aiming for zero-waste-to-landfill in South Africa.
“All our local and regional manufacturing facilities are zero-waste-to-landfill sites. Beyond this, we continue to find solutions to address water scarcity at our food manufacturing plant in Cape Town,” explains Ayling.
“These actions are just the start of a strong commitment to sustainability. We are excited to do our part to substantially transform the world we live in, to a more sustainable one within our lifetime,” he concludes.
The new packaging initiative at Mars Incorporated will minimise the multinational’s impact on the planet and save costs where possible. Besides the vast reduction in packaging waste, the initiative will also ensure that no waste ends up in landfills in South Africa.
